Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was only a young teenager when her father who worked as an carnival barker, died. Her mother was forced to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth attended school, and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. Her school was closed in two years, to go into acting. She faced many obstacles on the path she chose to pursue. In New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine however, no theatre opportunities were offered. While in New York, she worked in a bar as a check-in girl before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a regular actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, in the ushering department. Drama studies led her to receive a degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
